The role of the Board of Health is to establish public health policy, promote health for the community and be an advocate for all citizens.

The Boards of County Commissioners appoints members from the community for a 3 year term of service and the County Commissioners select a member from their board to serve on the Board of Health. Specific professions are required by general statute to be members. Members may be reappointed for a maximum of three (3) year terms.

The Appalachian District Board of Health meets every other month. Notices of meetings are posted in the local county health department and with local county administration.
