Northwest Tobacco Prevention Coalition

Smoke Free Dining Stoplight

During the past 2 ˝ years, the NTPC Coalition conducted campaigns in the three district counties to increase the number of smokefree restaurants. Those facilities that are currently smokefree and those that adopt a smokefree policy receive a Certificate of Appreciation and a “Go-Light” sticker (see pictures) to place at their entrance. Those restaurants that are not smokefree are sent packets of information about the hazards of secondhand smoke and the advantages of smokefree environments. They are asked to participate in the Smokefree Dining Campaign.

Increases in percentages of smokefree restaurants were seen in all counties, with Watauga going from 58% to 80%. Alleghany County now has 50% smokefree restaurants, and Ashe County has 60% smokefree restaurants; both of these counties also increased their percentages.

Smokefree Dining Lists have been developed for each county and may be accessed at the links below. Advertisements listing the smokefree restaurants will also be placed in each county newspaper(s) annually, giving free publicity to those restaurants. Although not always in an active stage, the campaigns are ongoing, and we welcome the opportunity to increase the number of smokefree restaurants.

The Campaign has been so successful that we have expanded it to include businesses. Similar stickers and appreciation certificates are available to any business that is smokefree and wishes to participate. Contact Teri VanDyke at 264-4995 or email teriv@apphealth.com for more information.
