Who can apply for WIC?

  • Pregnant women
  • Breastfeeding women who have had a baby in the last 12 months
  • Women who have had a baby in the last 6 months
  • Infants
  • Children up to 5 years
In addition, everyone must meet the WIC income guidelines which change each year on April 1.

WIC Income and Application Guidelines are straightforward. To sign up for WIC services you must visit the WIC Office in the Health Department nearest you. Call and make an appointment at your local health department. The phone numbers for Watauga, Ashe and Alleghany Health Departments are on the bottom of each page, and on the home page.

  • Be a NC resident
  • Bring identification to your appointment
  • Bring proof of residency
  • Provide proof of income
  • A current Medicaid Card will cover all of the above requirements
  • If you are on Medicaid, you are eligible for WIC

Although we can determine your income eligibility ahead of time, we cannot determine your health needs until we complete our assessment by checking the things below. You must also have a health risk factor based on:

    • Health history
    • Height and weight
    • Blood test for iron
    • Diet history

There are many openings for new clients. You are not taking anyone’s slot by enrolling in WIC.
