Vital Records Staff

The Alleghany County Health Department processes all birth and death certificates in the county. We work directly with funeral homes, medical examiners and hospitals. If the birth occurs at home, we also record home births. We do not usually work with the general public with our vital record information.

General Information

Births and deaths have been registered throughout the State of North Carolina only since 1913. Prior to 1913, the state of North Carolina did not use birth records or certificates of any kind.

Watauga and Alleghany Counties were created from the once larger, Ashe County. If you are conducting genealogical research, the Ashe County Register of Deeds has land and marriage records prior to 1859. Please contact the Ashe County Register of Deeds directly for more information.
